About the Hong Kong Dollar (HKD)
Symbol HK$, used in Hong Kong (and widely accepted in Macau). Shown with two decimal places.
- The Hong Kong dollar is pegged to the US dollar within a narrow band, so HKD to USD barely moves.
- Restaurants commonly add a 10% service charge to the bill.
- Banknotes are issued by three commercial banks, so you will see different designs for the same value.
About the Chinese Yuan (Renminbi) (CNY)
Symbol ¥, used in mainland China. Shown with two decimal places.
- Renminbi (RMB) is the name of the currency; the yuan is its unit; CNY is the ISO code used by banks and rate feeds.
- Mobile wallets dominate everyday payments in mainland China, so prices are often paid by QR code rather than cash.
- Offshore yuan traded outside mainland China uses the unofficial code CNH and can trade at a slightly different rate.
Getting a fair HKD to RMB rate
The rate on this page is the mid-market rate. When you pay by card or change cash, compare what you are offered against it: the gap is the real cost of the exchange. If a card terminal abroad offers to charge you in your home currency, it is usually better to pay in the local currency. Our guides on the mid-market rate and dynamic currency conversion explain why.
