About the US Dollar (USD)

Symbol $, used in the United States, and widely used alongside local money in places such as Ecuador, El Salvador and Panama. Shown with two decimal places.

  • The most traded currency in the world, and the usual pricing currency for flights, software and online services.
  • Sales tax in the US is usually added at the till rather than shown on the shelf price, so a price tag is rarely the final total.
  • Tipping is customary in restaurants, bars and taxis, so a percent key comes in handy.

About the Euro (EUR)

Symbol €, used in the eurozone countries of the European Union, plus a few microstates and territories. Shown with two decimal places.

  • One currency across most of the EU, but not all of it: Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Czechia and Hungary keep their own.
  • Shelf prices normally include VAT. Visitors from outside the EU can sometimes reclaim VAT on larger purchases.
  • The European Central Bank publishes euro reference rates each working day.

Getting a fair USD to EUR rate

The rate on this page is the mid-market rate. When you pay by card or change cash, compare what you are offered against it: the gap is the real cost of the exchange. If a card terminal abroad offers to charge you in your home currency, it is usually better to pay in the local currency. Our guides on the mid-market rate and dynamic currency conversion explain why.
