THE SHORT ANSWER

To add a currency converter widget on Android, touch and hold an empty part of the home screen, tap Widgets, find your currency app and drag a widget into place. Choose the currency pair when prompted, then resize the widget to show more, such as converted amounts or a number pad. Exact menu names vary by phone maker and launcher.

  • Android widgets are added by touching and holding the home screen and opening the Widgets list.
  • Most launchers let you resize a widget by touching and holding it and dragging its handles.
  • A good currency widget changes its layout as you resize it, from a simple rate to a full number pad.
  • Widget settings can usually be reopened from the widget itself to change the currency pair.
  • Android widgets can refresh in the background, so the rate stays reasonably current.

A home screen widget is the quickest way to keep an exchange rate in view. On Android, widgets are flexible: you can drop them anywhere, stretch them, and stack several on one page. This guide shows you how to add a currency converter widget on Android, choose the currencies, resize it for more detail, and fix the usual problems.

How do you add a currency converter widget on Android?

You add it from the home screen's Widgets list. Android phones use different launchers (the software that draws the home screen), so labels can differ slightly, but the steps are nearly always these.

  1. Install a currency app that includes widgets and open it once so it can download exchange rates.
  2. Touch and hold an empty area of your home screen until a menu appears.
  3. Tap Widgets.
  4. Scroll or search for the app. Tap it to see the widgets it offers.
  5. Touch and hold the widget you want, then drag it to a free spot and let go.
  6. If a setup screen appears, pick your currencies and confirm.

Some launchers instead show an Add button under each widget preview. Tap it and the widget lands on the current page.

Which widget should you choose?

Start with the one that matches what you do most. Calcurate offers two widgets on Android, and both change layout as you resize them.

WidgetDefault sizeWhat it shows
Exchange Rate2×2The rate in both directions
Quick Convert4×4An amount field over a number pad

The sizes are measured in home screen grid cells. A 2×2 widget takes the space of four app icons, and a 4×4 widget fills a good part of the screen.

Small: the rate both ways

At its small size, the widget shows one unit of each currency in the other. With an example rate, a Thai baht and Singapore dollar pair reads like this:

1 THB =S$0.03969
1 SGD =฿25.19

Wide: the rate plus round amounts

Stretch it wider and three round amounts appear, already converted. At the same example rate:

฿100 →S$3.97

Round amounts are useful because most prices are close to one of them, and you can scale up in your head.

Large: a number pad on the home screen

At the large size you get an amount field over a number pad. Each key press updates the converted result on the home screen, so you can type a price and read the answer without opening anything. ⇄ swaps the two currencies and Clear empties the field. The home screen widgets page shows each layout.

How do you resize a widget on Android?

Touch and hold the widget, then drag the handles that appear around it. On most launchers you touch and hold, lift your finger once the outline shows, and then drag the dots on the edges. Tap anywhere outside to finish.

Because both Calcurate widgets switch layout when resized, resizing is how you move between the views above. Make Exchange Rate wider to see converted amounts, or shrink Quick Convert if you only want the rate.

Tip: If your launcher will not let a widget get bigger, check its grid settings. Some launchers let you change the home screen grid, which changes how much room a widget can take.

How do you change the currency pair?

Open the widget's settings and pick new currencies. You see the currency picker when you first add the widget, and you can bring it back later. On many phones you touch and hold the widget and tap a settings, edit or pencil option. On others you open the app's widget settings from the widget itself.

Set the "from" currency to the one on the price tags around you, and the "to" currency to the one you budget in. You can add the same widget twice with different pairs if your trip crosses a border. See the full list of supported currencies.

How often does an Android currency widget update?

Usually on a schedule in the background. Android lets widgets refresh without the app being open. Calcurate's widgets refresh hourly in the background from the app's cached rates.

The rates themselves come from the app, which uses live rates updated once a day and falls back to European Central Bank reference rates if needed. The app reuses its cached rates for an hour; after that, with no connection, it switches to rates bundled with the app, which go out of date, and shows OFFLINE. That is why it pays to open the app while you still have a connection before you travel. More detail is on the live exchange rates page, and our guide to an offline currency converter for travel covers trips with patchy signal.

These are mid-market reference rates. The rate your bank or card applies usually includes a margin or a fee, and that differs between providers, so treat the widget as a guide rather than the exact amount you will be charged.

What can you do with a currency widget day to day?

Use it for quick checks and leave the bigger sums to the app. Some situations where a widget saves time:

  • Market stalls and menus. The wide layout covers most prices with round amounts.
  • Online shopping from abroad. Type the exact price into the number pad to compare with a local shop.
  • Freelance quotes. Keep your client's currency and yours on the home screen while you price a job.
  • Cash withdrawals. The reverse rate (1 SGD in baht, for example) tells you roughly how much local cash a sum gets you.

Tapping the rate or the amount opens the app on a convert sheet with the keyboard up. Close the sheet and the full calculator can do things a widget cannot, like adding prices in three currencies at once. The multi-currency maths page explains how.

Troubleshooting common widget problems

Most issues come from battery settings or launcher quirks.

  • The widget shows old rates. Open the app so it can refresh its cache. If background updates stay slow, check whether battery optimisation is restricting the app in your phone's settings.
  • The app is not in the Widgets list. Make sure it finished installing, then restart the launcher or the phone.
  • The widget looks cramped. Resize it, or reduce the icon and grid size in your launcher settings.
  • The widget disappeared after an update. This can occasionally happen. Add it again from the Widgets list.
